How to Cross the Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains

I've got a backboner just thinking about it!

These are the kinds of jokes a girl must put up with when she's the only one in a sea of backbone-crossing men. Amazingly, despite the high testosterone levels, we didn't get lost or have to ask mountain hobbits for directions.

Crossing the Santa Monica Mountains' Backbone Trail without a hitch is no easy feat. Most people who've tried have inevitably wound up confused, as the trail isn't well marked, and maps have different official names for various Backbone trail sections.

You can count on a few flat tires, and a grand adventure.

And if you have my coachubby, you can count on a flawless Backbone Trail crossing--connections completed, crew properly placed, and camping reserved. Put coachubby in the wilderness with a map, and he's a genius.

The weekend was not only a triumphant connection of the Backbone trail from Point Mugu to Will Rodgers State Park, but it was also a huge validation of coachubby's race coordination skills. It was like planning an Ironman for 7-8 people, accommodations and everything.

All in all, coachubby and I were the only participants to connect the entire trail. Several others came for the different legs, the camping, the beer, and the camaraderie.

It broke down like this:

It was a freezing 7am start on Saturday. Meredith (yes! another female!), coachubby, Folks (coachubby's friend from collegiate triathlon), and I were dropped off by Meredith's husband, Jim. Upon exiting the warmth and luxury of Jim's LR3, my fear of becoming an Erincicle began to materialize.

Luckily, the first 3ish miles of 16 mile run from Pt. Mugu were uphill, and we all warmed up. And if that wasn't enough, the 4ish miles straight up Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3111 feet, did the trick.

So did laughing at this butt crack rock formation. It's official name has since been forgotten.

Then it was on down to Yerba Buena, where Jim, and our other crewman, Eric, were waiting, along with mountain biker extraordinaire, Aaron (pronounced A-ron, so as not to confuse us with each other). I stuffed my face with PB&J&potato chip sandwiches and we were off. Jim, A-ron, coachubby, Folks and I.

The 30 mile mountain bike from Yerba Buena to Malibu Creek State Park was going along smoothly. The first 15 miles were mostly downhill and not too technical.

Then Folks did this to his tire somehow:

He was out of the game for the rest of the day. Luckily, there was a bike shop not too far from the half-way point that put him back into commission for the final descent on Sunday.

Despite what I would call near freezing temps in the low 50s, Jim overheated, and bailed from the ride a good 2/3rds into it. Besides cracking endless backboner jokes, boys sweat buckets out of their heads when they exercise. Jim and coachubby could've easily refilled their water bottles by squeezing on their helmets. Gross.

Then we camped, roughing it a few hundred yards from a major LA canyon road:

And made turkey burgers:

While the boys drank and talked and farted late into the night.

The next morning, daylight savings time robbed us of an hour, making it just as freezing at 8:30am as it was at 7:30 the day before.

But again, the 13.1 mile run from Malibu Creek to Topanga State Park started by bringing us up the second-highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. The burn in my quads and rear quickly made me forget about freezing. It did, however, make me think that I would be a good morning kill for a mountain lion, trailing behind the boys all alone.

Lucky for me, when we hit the downhill, Folks's knee went bezurk, making him more appetizing and me less vulnerable.
(Stunt road goes off to the left in this photo.)

We hobbled 2 more miles uphill to the final transition.

After a few more PBJ&potato chip sandwiches, Jim, Meredith, Folks, A-ron, coachubby and I rode the final 11.5 miles from Topanga State Park up to the Hub, then down to Will Rogers, ending on an epic 6-mile single track, complete with people, loose rock, and more people.
(Jim, Folks, coachubby, Meredith, A-ron, me)

No carnage.
Totally rad.
We finished around 3pm, with plenty of time for an evening celebration.

With the economy massively sucking, there's no better time to plan your own adventure than right now, especially if you live in SoCal. It's gorgeous outside, there are limitless trails, and all you need is some gas money, motivated friends, and food. (Some training wouldn't hurt, either.)

Next up: a one-day backboner!
But not too soon.
We still can't walk.

P.S. Want help planning your very own Backbone Crossing from backbone expert, coachubby? Email triathletediva@gmail.com and I'll hook you up.

Backbone Trail Crossing Completed!

WE DID IT!

The race report is coming as soon as I stop feeling like I got a sucker punch to the brain. And every inch of my body, including multiple sucker punches to the legs.

Fears #1 and #3 (see below) were entirely valid.

No mountain lion sightings.

However, there were mountain lion poo sightings along the trail, but I'm no Bear Grylls, so the trail poo might've been incorrectly identified. At least that's what I told myself when I was running all alone in the early morning.

The Epic Crossing of Santa Monica's Backbone Trail

Coachubby has been planning an epic adventure. Recon rides and runs have occupied his weekends for months, and it's all about to come together this weekend.

We're going to cross the entire Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains, starting at Point Mugu, and ending at Will Rogers State Park. About 70 miles total.

Here's the breakdown:
Saturday:
Start at Pt. Mugu, run about 17 miles.
Pick up mountain bikes at Yerba Buena crossing, bike about 30 miles.
Camp at Malibu Creek State Park.

Sunday:
Run about 13 miles to Topanga State Park.
Pick up mountain bikes, bike about 10 miles to Will Rogers State Park.

Sunday Afternoon:
Rejoice.

Current concerns:
  1. Becoming a frozen Erincicle Saturday night.
  2. Mountain lions.
  3. Becoming a frozen Erincicle Saturday and Sunday mornings.
No, I am not from Puerto Rico, but I share American Idol finalist, Jorge Nuñez's, feelings about LA's current weather: It's freezing.

...I mean...who's on American Idol?

Check back next week for a full Backbone Trail report so you can successfully stage your own crossing. The trail is not well marked in a lot of areas, so we'll all benefit from coachubby's recon...if he remembers where he's been.

Hula Hoop Your Way to a Trimmer Waistline!

A headline like that led my mom to buy a sparkly blue hula hoop recently.

The pretty plastic hoop becomes much more than a children's game when it's filled with water--it's a Level III or Black Diamond waist management tool that's way harder to keep going than your typical Level 1 hoop.

I am not a Level III hula hooper. But there's still hope for newbie hoopers who just can't keep the hoop up; you'll laugh so hard watching your friends/family stink at it, too, that you'll still get a belly work out!

So who's best with the belly action? Mom? Dad? Me? I'll let you decide...

(P.S. Sorry the videos are sideways...Lie down to watch these!)

Contestant #1: Mom

Contestant #2: Dad

Contestant #3: Me

Calling All Unattractive Spin Instructors

Spin classes are fabulous. It's quite a treat to jump on a bike and ride as hard as you want without constantly looking over your shoulder for cops at t-stops (...I mean stopping at stop signs...) or narrowly avoiding getting hit by Mr. Magoo driving a giant bus.

If the class is taught by an instructor who can choose and mix great beats, pick killer drills, and manage to keep the class motivated without singling anyone out, or getting off of his bike, it might become a solid part of your workout routine.

However, if said class is as fantastic as the class outlined above--and taught by a guy who is genuinely enthusiastic about fitness, friendly, blond, and classically handsome in a Greek statue sort of way--the class may become reminiscent of your high school lunch break.

Women of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels storm my favorite spin class every week for a chance to show off new boobs to this instructor, whom we shall call Beefcake, in workout clothes smaller than my regular underwear. And no, I don't wear granny panties.

These women are always up for the "hover"position, which will allow them to lean over the handlebars in such a way that said boobs will be highlighted in all their eerily standoutish glory.

They travel in small groups (the women, I mean. Boobs do that all of the time.), rushing into the room when the doors open, hoping to get bikes in the front row. They call each other by names like "Sweetie" and "Dahling" while secretly planning how they'll win more attention from the instructor than their friends that day.

The top 10 spots in a class of about 28 bikes fill up fast, at a reservation price of $1. The rest are up for grabs an hour before class starts, and if you're not there at 6am on the dot, you can count yourself out of the interval workout you've been counting on all week. America's obesity epidemic clearly does not live on the third floor of my gym.

And so, in search of the perfect class that does not require spending extra time at my gym (a hub for people to scam on each other, like any gym in LA, I suppose) to get into class, or potentially get my eyes gouged out by fake fingernails, I'm calling on all of you equally enthusiastic, fun, hip spin instructors who aren't Beefcakeishly handsome to start teaching classes there.

In return, I offer you a small group of devoted hard-core athletes who will relish whatever monstrous workout you bark out. Around these parts, even some of those hard-core girls have fake boobs, so you won't be missing out on Beefcake's scene entirely. Promise.

Skiing Blind in Mammoth

Snow dumped on Mammoth like it had no other place in the world to go. It made skiing there this past Friday and Saturday an exercise in skiing by feel, rather than by sight.

If the snow let up, the fog rolled in. And if a skiier could get over being cold and wet and having little snow pellets sting every exposed pore in her face, she would be treated to the most fluffy, slippery, fun powder days she had ever experienced.

Fun for her, evil for her quads.

Powder skiing isn't exactly the greatest way to rest sore quads before continuing onto the next "build" phase in an ultra cycling training plan.

But they are always, 100% totally worth the short, intense pain. And powder days are always, 100% totally more awesome than being stuck in LA when it's cold and rainy.

Mammoth's runs are all short. When it's snowing, the top of the mountain with all of the supposedly most rad runs is shut down. Maybe there are some longer runs if you start up there, but I have yet to huck myself off of them.

If you're skiing as a rest week activity--and/or as revenge for two days lost to a Death Salad--Mammoth's short expert runs are just what the coach ordered.

Runs off of lift 22, when covered in boatloads of powder, are bliss. Blind, foggy runs off of 5 will engage your core while teaching you to balance as you ski over stuff you can't see at all because the ground below you is literally attached to the sky surrounding you. Runs to the right of lift 1 offer short chutes and the occasional sighting of intense wipe outs as daredevils huck off of rocks.

And the worse the weather gets, the more the crowds thin out. And the higher you're willing to go up into the fog, the higher your chances of not having to play frogger on your way down.

Mammoth is an awesome getaway for Californians. I'd recommend going on a weekday in order to get in more skiing and less time standing in line for a lunch table or a ride up.

But Telluride is still my happy place. Even during the biggest holidays, Gold Hill never has a line, and the opportunities for creating an epic run of 3000 vertical feet of pure moguls are far greater than at Mammoth.

Just remember: About a 6 hour drive from the South Bay of LA, Mammoth = Recovery. Telluride = Intense Training for those willing to seek it out.

Happy Cross Training!

Revelation at Telluride's New Revelation Bowl: I Have Food Poisoning

After four straight days of skiing 9-4, a time restriction placed on skiiers by Telluride's more recently wussified hours of lift operation (I seem to remember having the option of submitting oneself to frostbite by riding up lift 9 at 7:30 am) something terrible happened.

Feeling as fabulous as a girl could after riding a mountain bike nonstop for one week, then skiing for 4 days, I went for my favorite winter run back into Telluride's box canyon, mine-side, then sat in a hot tub. It was the high life. Aside from throbbing toes caused by boot banging, everything was peachy keen.

Then, at 2 in the morning on Thursday, January 8th, I was attacked by something coachubby and I can only describe as pooke. Let's just say it was not only a space-saving design to have the bathtub right next to the toilet, but a lifesaving one as well.

I was aiming for a 6.5 day skiing streak, but was aggressively savaged by, from what investigators (mom) could tell after close inspection and clean-up, a darth "Insalata di Pollo e Spinaci" from Rustico on Telluride's main drag.

Rustico Telluride

I figured it was the Big Guy's way of punishing me for accidentally ordering the most expensive thing on the menu from a restaurant down the street a few days earlier. Who knew a "Pasta Special" could cost more than $20? Now I do.

And I paid for it.

By not getting to eat or ski or be in any way vertical for 2 straight days, and not getting to eat anything with flavor or much protein through this very moment. All those muscles I packed on in the "off season"? Gone. Eaten by the darth Italian salad.

Telluride

I still managed to pull off one more "epic run", skiing 3,130 vertical feet of pure moguls rather unaggressively, before jumping in the car and lying down for the 8-hour drive back to Phoenix on Saturday, soothed by the "r"-challenged voice of Tuba City's 91.3 Native public radio---the only station for hundreds of miles in Northern AZ, which treated coachubby, my parents and I to hours of the hits...from 1950 and decendingly beyond.

But before the bug, there was the pure awesomeness that can only come from a 60-inch base in December, and a fresh dumping the first two days upon arrival in my (and apparently Tom Cruise's) happy place, Telluride. An awesomeness that also came from knowing that there'd be something new in this year's pilgrimage to the canyon--Revelation Bowl.

Revelation Bowl

Skiiers, myself included, had longingly looked into the beautiful, vast, pure openness on the East and opposite side of Gold Hill. They can't help it. The lift drops you off in a way that you practically start down that silky slope if you don't hang left down the road to the double black of your choice under Gold Hill. (Don't get me started on how you used to have to hike before 2pm to get to do a single Gold Hill run!)

According to the Telluride Daily Planet, Revelation Bowl was so named for all of the people who followed that longing in their heart to make fresh tracks down the virgin bowl, only to have the revelation a short time later that there was no way out...unless you like jumping off of cliffs.

And so helicopters worked round the clock to install Lift 15 so that those of us who dream of backcountry skiing, but who secretly like the idea that Ski Patrol will rescue us if we screw up in bounds, could ski that area. Coachubby loved it. I loved it. The snow was thick and abundant. The terrain is steep, but fun.

And when you get enough of all that openness and sunshine, you can hit up Buzz's Glade from the new lift.

So there you have it: Revelation Bowl was a worthy investment by Telluride developers. Now if only there'd be a lift (and enough snow) up Palmyra Peak, Mt. Baldy, and the higher-up Gold Hill chutes, Telluride would become the country's most enabling ski resort for self-punishing quad abusers. In fact, it might just be there already.

And that's how we like it!

Stink at Mountain Biking? Try This!

Have you ever decided you’d give your road bike a break to get down ‘n’ dirty on some sweet single track only to find you’re a real wuss off road? You try to avoid every crack or bump in the trail, believing your tire will somehow wedge itself into it or blow on it while you try to tell yourself your big fat knobbies can take it? So what if your big fat knobbies can take the trail ahead and you can’t? Is there any hope for a cycling junkie who wants to become more well-rounded in the sport and kick ass on and off road?

YES!

And what better way to learn than trial by fire? Grab a buddy (or 4) and sign up for a 24 Hour mountain biking extravaganza! Try a 2 person 8-hour race, part of the 24 hour dirtfest. Or grab some more friends and make it a day! (And night…) Chances are you’ll get to go around at the approximately 10 mile course at least 3 times. And on that 2nd or 3rd turn, you’ll already start to feel like a pro! (Note: TriDiva recommends bringing at least one extra friend to keep you company while your mountain biking buddy is tearing up the course.)

What is this craziness TriDiva speaks of? It’s called 24 Hours of Adrenalin, and it truly rocks. (www.24hoursofadrenalin.com) The people are friendly, and the course is just challenging enough to feel that you’ve conqurered something, but it won’t kill you self-professed MTB babies.

Finally, what’s more fun than a race where you get to take a break, camp, and drink while you’re racing! (Crits were never this much fun!)

So hit up a friend to borrow his/her mountain bike and get your adrenalin pumping. Pretty soon, you’ll want to be just like those guys who race the whole 24 hours solo. Been looking for a new goal after Ironman?

Happy Training, Adrenalin Junkies!

Cross Training Idea: Chasing After a Wave Runner

Need incentive to swim as hard as you can in rough water without being chased by a shark or other large animal? Try this brand new exercise! (Note: fiancĂ© may be substituted with friend/coach/exercise buddy/dog/etc…)

Step 1: Take your fiancĂ©’s family wave runner for a spin with fiancĂ© attached to your back.

Step 2: Drive as far away from shore as possible.

Step 3: Decide to allow your fiancé his chance to drive. It is his, after all.

Step 4: Take your hand out of the kill switch to trade places with fiancé.

Step 5: Fall off of wave runner.

Step 6: Cuss loudly as wave runner takes itself for a joy ride, unburdened by you and your fiancĂ©’s combined mass.

Step 7: Sprint freestyle in a lifejacket across lake with fiancĂ© laughing behind you while you pray you won’t have to swim back to shore sans wave runner or sanity.

Step 8: Praise a higher power for waves that turn the wave runner in a 90 degree angle.

Step 9: Violently remove kill switch from unruly wave runner.

Step 10: Remount wave runner.

Step 11: Repeat as necessary until you feel you’ve had a sufficient workout/ sufficient embarrassment from other seafaring people who have not lost their vessels.

Happy Cross Training!

Underwater Bicycle Racing

Something to consider if you need to beat the heat! Or if you have injured yourself and still want to get the miles in...like pool running...only weirder...

And as an added bonus, you can work on your bikini/speedo tan without looking strange.

Active Things to Do With Friends Who Don’t Tri

If you’re feeling down because you forgo social activity because it doesn’t mesh with your training—and your friends and family are feeling neglected—consider these activities that will keep you in tip top tri shape AND satisfy everyone’s need to be around your awesomeness:

1. Go for a long hike. After a hilly long hike, your butt and thighs will hurt more than any long hilly run you’ve ever done.

2. “Play” in the ocean (if you have one). You can then practice your ins and outs under the guise of “bodysurfing”, and challenge your friends to swim out to something and back (thereby getting in your yardage…but keeping up the appearance that you are just “playing”.)

3. Have a pushup or crunch contest.

4. Go out for Italian food. They’ll enjoy it and never know you have the ulterior motive of carbo-loading.

5. Go shopping. Watching your girlfriends (or the new upcrop of metrosexual dudes) drop tons of cash on clothes will make you feel less guilty about spending all of yours on spandex. I have yet to find a skinsuit that costs as much as a pair of D&G jeans.

Enjoy Your Friends! (And whip them into shape in the process!)

Happy Friday!

How to Get Out of a Training Slump - Mountain Bike Style

You've logged so many miles on the roads around your town, the next town over, and maybe even all over your entire state. The thought of doing one more "morning loop" makes you want to turn off the lights and set the alarm to "never". Before you throw in the towel and start eating massive amounts of chocolate because your slumpish state of mind has you feeling like you'll never be an athlete again, TRY SOMETHING NEW!

And I don't mean something new like doing your loop backward (although sometimes that helps).

Put away your aerobars, your skinny tires, and fear of small cracks in the road, steal a friend's mountain bike, and hit the trails! Not only will you still get a great workout in, you'll feel reinvigorated, and realize there's a whole different world of skills you need to work on. Isn't that fun!? And instead of avoiding every little crevice and bump in the road like the plague or getting yelled at to "hold your line", you can slam into everything in your path--you can even swerve off and create your own!

Nothing's stopping you now!

Any complete lack handling skill can be greatly masked by a nice full-suspension bike with disc brakes.

Just sayin'.

And if the freedom of the open fire road wasn't enough to get your blood flowin' again, consider this: chicks and cool dudes alike dig mountain biking scars. So if you're ready, forget the full suspension and disc brakes, bust out that bike your dad bought you when you were 13 because it was "pretty" and get flying down those hills! Sign up for an Xterra event while you're at it--it'll make you get better fast so you won't look like a weenie come race day.

And possibly, you will soon look as cool as this dude:

Swim, Run, Bike...SKI! Get out there and hit that powder!

Seriously! It's good for you!

If you're training for an early spring race like IMAZ, chances are all of those articles about winter weight gain, getting slothful in the cold months, etc... are totally irrelevant. Why? You've chosen to work your butt off, literally, during your vacation in the hopes of meeting a fabulous goal at your upcoming race. Kudos to you!

But you might have noticed something else...all of that year-round training without any break is driving you MAD! Before you head for a mental breakdown and curse yourself and your "crazy" Ironman (or Olympic or Half or Sprint...) dreams, consider this: CROSS TRAINING. Not just any cross training. GO SKIING.

Now if you've never strapped on a pair of skis in your life, don't go throwing yourself down the double diamonds on the first day. But consider these skiing facts:

  • it's a quad burner

  • you've got to be at elevation to ski--sometimes at elevations of 12,000 feet or higher--thereby giving your lungs a super workout

  • it improves coordination

  • doing long bump runs is equivalent to running sprints around a track (10 minutes hard down a run, 15 mins or less back up the chair for rest. If you do bumps all day, you'll be cursing those new high-speed quad lifts they just put in, and wishing the old, slow, creaky doubles were still in operation!)

  • if you haven't already found the single of your dreams in the very social sport of triathlon, chances are you'll find someone in the equally social sport of skiing. Romance on the mountain, anyone?

Plus, there are even more added perks than stronger thighs and a greater V02 max! Like mountain side hot chocolate, giant rice krispy treats, slopeside entertainment, people watching (was that guy's suit straight out of the '80s, or what!?), and white fluffy stuff you can eat, throw at friends, or use to ice sore spots.

So what are you waiting for? Grab those skis and hit the slopes! And don't worry about your training plan. You'll be in tip top shape when you get back after a full week of skiing--hot chocolate, rice krispy breaks, and all!Telluride Skiing
